Welcome from the Minister for Economic Development, Petroleum, Investment, Trade and Commerce

Hon. Erwin Contreras
As the Minister of Economic Development, Petroleum, Investment, Trade and Commerce with responsibility for the Belize Social Investment Fund (BSIF), it is indeed, a privilege and pleasure on behalf of the Government and people of Belize; to congratulate the Belize Social Investment Fund on this milestone achievement of providing 20 years (1996-2016) of unwavering service to the continued development of the country’s human resources, infrastructure, and national development of Belize.
The Government of Belize by way of investing in the country’s future through the Belize Social Investment Fund, has made, and continues to make herculean achievements in improving the quality of life for present and future generations. It is within this context, the Government of Belize continues to accelerate the pace to realise social and economic development, social justice, and respond to the challenges of climate change as outlined in government’s Growth and Development Strategy, Horizon 2030, and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

BSIF is government’s poverty-reduction flagship addressing the basic needs of Belizeans through socio-economic initiatives and community empowerment. Therefore, the Government of Belize remains steadfast, and continues to intensify its poverty alleviation programs through strategic collaboration and cooperation with social partners in addressing the development needs of men, women, and children.

The Government of Belize has consistently invested surmountable resources in meeting the development needs as well as addressing the basic human needs of vulnerable groups and communities across the landscape of the country in the areas of Education, Health, Water and Sanitation, Institutional Strengthening, Infrastructure Development, Skills Training and Social Services.
In recognition of 500 hundred + projects implemented by way of the Belize Social Investment Fund; the Government of Belize will continue to implement infrastructure projects aimed in improving the quality of lives of Belizeans, in particular, new water systems, new polyclinics, and new schools country-wide from pre-school to high school and multi-purpose centres.

Thus, I salute the Belize Social Investment Fund for its sterling accomplishments over the years, and with anticipation look forward to the continued vigorous contributions as we continue the never-ending journey of “Transforming the Lives of Belizeans and Breaking the Cycle of Poverty.”
